6-day Costa Vicentina and Algarve Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Vila Nova de Milfontes (Alentejo)

Day 2: Costa Vicentina – beach crawling, Lagos and Alvor
Day 3: Portimão
Day 4: Benagil, Portimão, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, Quarteira
Day 5: Quarteira
Day 6: Return home

Day 1: Vila Nova de Milfontes (Alentejo)

Our adventure began in Porto. We left at 2:00 PM, and after a scenic drive, we arrived at Vila Nova de Milfontes around 6:30 PM. This charming town in the Alentejo region was a perfect starting point. Checking into Mira Vila by Stay in Alentejo (60.49€ for one night), we were immediately captivated by the tranquility of the area. Following a local tip, we hurried to Farol Beach to watch the sunset.

Keeping our budget in mind, we packed homemade food for the first day and the next morning’s breakfast. Upon arriving at Farol Beach, we enjoyed a simple meal and sliced fruit while sitting at the back of our car. Afterwards, we found the perfect spot to watch the sunset. There’s truly nothing more relaxing than watching the waves as the sun sets on the horizon.

Day 2: Costa Vicentina – Beach Crawling, Lagos and Alvor

Our beach crawl began early as we left the hotel at 9 AM. The first stop was Zambujeira do Mar, a quiet and foggy beach that felt like a serene escape. Unfortunately, the fog followed us to Carvalhal Beach and Odeceixe Beach. Despite the fog, Odeceixe beach stood out for its extensiveness and beauty. Arrifana Beach on the other hand, was a delightful surprise. The sun finally came out, and we swam alongside surfers. This beach, with its long descent and vibrant atmosphere, quickly became a favorite.

As lunchtime approached, we headed to Sagres and had lunch at A Cabana (37.10€ for two). The “À Brás” Style codfish and warm service made it a highlight of the day. After lunch, we headed to the stunning Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. The dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters were absolutely breathtaking. We strolled along the pathways and admired the rock formations.

Tip: Ponta da Piedade is a must-see in the Algarve. It’s free to visit, and the views are simply spectacular.

We then made our way to our next stay at Wyndham Residences in Alvor (197€ for 2 nights). The room was amazing, with a fully equipped kitchen, perfect for our budget-friendly grocery shopping (23.36€) at Pingo Doce. We ended the day swimming at the beach and then chasing another sunset.

Tip: Visit local supermarkets like Pingo Doce and Continente for groceries. We spent only 23.36€ on groceries that lasted two days.

Day 3: Portimão – Catamaran Cruise

The next day, after a short drive, we arrived at Portimão Marina where we embarked on a 4-hour catamaran lunch cruise with Discover Tours (89.60€). Despite the choppy waters, the experience was exhilarating. With only seven people on board, perks of going in early June, it felt like a private tour. We saw the caves and beautiful beaches from afar and enjoyed sunbathing and swimming. Sadly, we did not manage to see any dolphins during the trip. The afternoon was spent relaxing by the pool at Wyndham Residences, sipping on refreshing cocktails (14.50€).

Tip: For booking activities like our catamaran trip, we used GetYourGuide. It’s an excellent platform for finding and booking activities, often with great deals and reviews to help you choose the best experiences.

Day 4: Benagil, Portimão, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, Quarteira

Initially planning a kayak trip (50€) to Benagil caves with André Matos Boat Trips, the water conditions forced a change of plans. Instead, we enjoyed a fantastic boat tour. We started the day by going to Benagil and since it was not possible to go on the kayaks we just strolled around for a while soaking in the views before going to Portimão to get the boat. The tour was educational and fun, revealing secret beaches and even a historical cave used for contraband during Portugal’s dictatorship era. We also saw rock formations that resembled faces and an elephant!

After the boat trip that took around two hours, we headed to Ferragudo for lunch. We chose Petiscos Capela for some Portuguese tapas (35.40€). We had squid, fried cuttlefish and octopus salad. It was a delightful meal. Afterwards, we explored the picturesque Algar Seco in Carvoeiro, where natural rock formations created a stunning landscape and we went inside Boneca’s cave for a unique view.

Then we headed to our final accommodation from this trip – Dom José hotel, in Quarteira (248€ for 2 nights). The location was privileged right in front of the beach. We went for a swim in the pool and then, to end our day, we took a long walk to Vilamoura Marina where we enjoyed ice cream (€3.20).

Day 5: Relaxation in Quarteira

This was our most relaxing day, spent enjoying Quarteira’s beach and the hotel pool. We treated ourselves to sushi (30.98€) which I do not recommend (I have really high standards for sushi) and ended the day with a splendid dinner at Tasquinha da Horta (63.50€). The food was fantastic, making it a fitting conclusion to our stay in Quarteira.

Tip: Consider dining at local “tascas” for authentic and budget-friendly meals. Look for the “prato do dia” (dish of the day) to save money while experiencing local cuisine.

Day 6: Return to Porto

Our final day was spent swimming and enjoying the morning in Quarteira before starting our journey back to Porto.
